Let’s go to Phi Phi and Maya Bay

Maya Bay on Koh Phi Phi Leh

PHOTO: Maya Bay pre-2018. Now the famous bay is sealed off from boats and visitors must approach from a specially built pier behind the island. Better for visitors, better for Maya Bay.

Phi Phi is a particularly well know location in the Phuket and Krabi region, with one of its two iconic islands made famous after being featured in the 2000 Hollywood movie, “The Beach” starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The On On Hotel in Phuket Town, Phuket, was also used as the ‘Bangkok’ location at the start of the movie (now a very swish boutique hotel you can stay at).

While many people mistakenly believe that Koh Phi Phi is made up of just one island, in fact it is a group of 6 islands in total. 5 of these islands are virgin islands, with no developments or premises on them other than National Park buildings. but they do provide amazing scenery and opportunities for great photos and swimming.

Phi Phi Don is the only island in this group which does have developments; including hotels, restaurants, shops and bars. There’s also some beaches on each side of the small island and walking tracks, including a famous viewpoint which you will have to visit.

There is also a vibrant nightlife on Koh Phi Phi Don. You can certainly visit the island for a day trip but we would recommend you stay for the night to enjoy some excellent seafood or late night music and entertainment.

This island is also known for various fantastic snorkelling locations and authentic Thai restaurants.

The most notable “Beach” in the Phi Phi Island group is the spectacular Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh. Maya Bay was closed for reef restoration from 2018 until the start of 2022. It is now open again with restricted access to Maya Bay allowed via a pier. The local national parks have placed a ceiling on daily visits to help maintain a unique memory for all visitors.

We would also recommend a visit to the equally spectacular Phi Leh Lagoon, just a 10 minute boat ride from Maya Bay.

The Phi Phi Islands have some stunning coral reefs abound with marine life, ready to give you an unforgettable experience, swimming and snorkelling in crystal clear tropical waters.

With so much to see and do, the Krabi Islands are a perfect mix for sightseeing, adventure, snorkelling and some of the best beaches in the area. 5 Star Marine are experts when it comes to the wide selection of islands, snorkelling and sightseeing spots in this area; and can often get you to stunning locations with nobody else around.
