Police on the tourist magnet island of Koh Phi Phi are investigating the death of an American man thought to have drowned. According to a Phuket Express report, the 51 year old, whose name is being withheld until family members have been notified, was visiting the popular Viking Cave at the time.

The Viking Cave is on the opposite side of Koh Phi Phi Leh to the popular Maya Bay.

Viking Cave is a popular location for diving and snorkelling. It’s understood the American got into difficulty while in the water in front of the cave on Tuesday, April 18.

The Phuket Express reports that an unnamed tour guide told police that the man was initially alive and was transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment. He was given CPR at the hospital but doctors were unable to revive him and he was pronounced dead shortly after.

The report goes on to say that the tourist was travelling with a group of 9 friends. Police on Phi Phi have launched an investigation to determine the cause of death and are understood to be liaising with the American Embassy and the tourist’s next-of-kin.
