Two teenage boys have drowned after going swimming off a Koh Samui beach, despite the presence of red warning flags.
The Phuket Express reports that on Tuesday, February 27, two boys went missing while swimming off the island’s popular Chaweng Beach, in the Bo Phut sub-district. They were named only as Nattaphon and Mark, both 15 years of age, presumably Thai.
According to their friends, five of them had gone swimming in waves up to 2 metres. Two of the boys were swept away while the other 3 managed to get out of the water.
At 9.20pm that night, Mark’s body washed up on a beach around 1.6 kilometres from where’d last been seen. The search continued for Nattaphon, with rescue divers finding his body off Chaweng Beach yesterday morning, February 28.
The authorities in Koh Samui have urged people to take note of the red flags and “no swimming” signs and to refrain from entering the water when conditions are rough.
