A search and rescue operation is underway in northeast Thailand after the collapse of a train tunnel trapped 3 workers.
The Bangkok Post reports that a tunnel on the high-speed rail track in Nakhon Ratchasima province collapsed at around 11.30pm on Saturday night, August 24.
The collapse in the Pak Chong district trapped 2 workers who’d been using a backhoe and a truck to dig the tunnel, along with a foreman. It’s understood the missing are 2 Chinese men and a Burmese man.
The cause of the collapse is not yet known, but it was not raining at the time. The collapsed section is around 4 kilometres from the tunnel entrance.
The tunnel belongs to a section of track over 250 kilometres long and part of the Sino-Thai high-speed rail project, linking Bangkok and Nakhon Ratchasima. It is expected to be complete in 2028, according to a Bangkok Post report.
Rescue workers are now using excavators to reach the trapped workers. Latest reports are that rescuers detected vital signs earlier this morning, sparking hope that the men are still alive.
