Airport bosses plan to get Suvarnabhumi into list of “Top 50 Airports”

The director of Airports of Thailand wants to see Suvarnabhumi on a list of the world’s top 50 airports by next year. Kirati Kijmanawat also hopes to see Bangkok’s international airport in the top 20 by 2028.

Suvarnabhumi currently sits at number 58 in Skytrax’s World’s Best Airport rankings for 2024, up from 68th last year. The jump of 10 places, according to the AoT, was the result of “improvements made in the airport’s services and an increase in passenger capacity thanks to the opening of the new satellite terminal 1.”

This year Doha Airport was voted #1 and Changi Airport #2.

According to a Bangkok Post report, Kirati says passenger screening times at Suvarnabhumi have also been shortened, with immigration processing accelerated and an additional 200 immigration officers appointed at Suvarnabhumi.

The average time a passenger spends going through the screening process has now been reduced from up to 50 minutes to 37 minutes, says Kirati, pointing out that the global average is 45 minutes. However, the government plans to reduce this further – to 30 minutes.

In addition, the AoT director says more upgrades are planned to further improve airport facilities and the overall customer experience. AoT plans to install 80 automated gates at immigration in August, along with adopting CT scanning for luggage checks.

Around half the airport’s current baggage scanners are expected to be replaced with CT scanners within a year, according to Kirati.

This will mean passengers can bring liquids such as drinks on board, a practice done away with globally following a 2006 terrorist plot to detonate liquid explosives on board commercial flights from the UK.

The East Expansion project is also being accelerated, adding more than 60,000 square metres of passenger area in order to reduce congestion. The additional space is expected to open by 2028.
