(but no mention of ‘recreational’ use)…
Thailand’s Interior Minister and leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, Anutin Charnvirakul, says he’s confident the medical cannabis act will be passed.
“We (the Bhumjaithai Party) have proposed the draft act to the Prime Minister and are waiting to see if it will be included in the policy statement to be delivered next week.”
In June 2022, Anutin, who was health minister at the time, removed cannabis from the list of narcotics, but the subsequent lack of clarity over its usage or limits on possession led to a “free for all”, with cannabis “dispensaries” popping up all over the place, with little to no regulation.
Anutin says that during his time in office, former PM Srettha Thavisin held talks with the health ministry and related bodies about a draft act that would highlight the approved usage and policies around cannabis.
He adds that he’s confident the new PM, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, will support the act that will allow the plant to be used for medicinal purposes.
The Interior Minister also referred to a proposal to establish entertainment complexes that would house legally established casinos. Anutin says the Bhumjaithai Party is willing to support the proposal, as it could attract foreign investment and create job opportunities.
“We need to figure out how to maximise the benefits of these complexes, as well as look into related laws and regulations, such as zoning adjustments.”
