Officials in Bangkok are showing off their new bridge over the Chao Phraya River, known as the second Rama IX bridge. It runs alongside the existing Rama IX bridge and has been built to help alleviate traffic congestion in the capital. It runs from central Bangkok to the developing suburbs near the Rama II area.
According to a report from the National News Bureau of Thailand, the new bridge is 41 metres tall, with a cable-stayed design over 8 lanes, all painted bright yellow.
The bridge is being temporarily opened to pedestrians, prior to it being made available to vehicles. For a short time, the public will be able to walk the bridge and take in the views of the river and their capital city.
The new bridge will be open to pedestrian traffic from February 23 to 25, between 4pm and 10pm each day. Once the bridge opens to cars and other vehicles, there will be no pedestrian access.
