The crewmember of a speedboat has died following an explosion on the vessel, which was docked at a pier in Phang Nga. Nation Thailand reports that 26 year old Panyawut Phothong died in the explosion, while his colleague, 25 year old Aroon Chanpaksuan, has been hospitalised with serious injuries.

It’s understood the Kalamung Dee 2, which was used to transport tourists to the Similan Islands, was docked at a pier in the village of Thap Lamu, in the sub-district of Lam Kaen, in Phang Nga’s Muang district. The explosion is reported to have occurred at around 9.00pm on Tuesday night. Police say the blast happened in a toilet at the front of the boat and resulted in a fire so intense, it prompted crew members on nearby boats to move them away.

Siwat Rawangkul, chief of Phang Nga’s Muang district, says rescue workers from Phang Nga Naval Base district worked with other officials to extinguish the blaze.

Both Panyawut and Aroon were rushed to Khao Lak hospital with severe injuries, with Panyawut succumbing to his injuries yesterday morning.
