An extremely deranged foreigner stole a taxi in Pattaya, then crashed it into a power pole, injuring himself.
The owner of the taxi, 37 year old Saranyut Panprasong, says that in the early hours of yesterday, September 12, he parked his vehicle outside a convenience store and left the engine running while he went to buy something. While inside the store, he saw a foreign man getting into the taxi and heading off down the street.
Fortunately, the thief didn’t get far, crashing into a power pole on Thappraya Road shortly after. Unfortunately (for the thief) it was right by a checkpoint where police were testing drivers for drink driving. The foreigner was immediately arrested.
The stolen taxi was severely damaged in the collision and the foreigner, who was very drunk and wearing only boxer shorts, sustained minor injuries. He later told police that in addition to drinking alcohol, he had smoked cannabis.
According to a Pattaya News report, the man was taken to Pattaya Police Station where he is expected to be charged and will have to pay for the damage to both the taxi and the power pole. Police also plan to test him for other drugs, saying suspects often blame cannabis due to its use being decriminalised and therefore less likely to incur a harsh penalty.
