An elderly food delivery driver has died after riding his motorbike against traffic, causing a head-on collision in Pattaya. AKA a ‘ghost rider’.
The 67 year old Grab delivery driver died in the collision, and a teenager on another bike was seriously injured. The Sawang Boriboon Rescue Centre was alerted to the collision, near the Bali Hai Overpass in the Banglamung district, at around midday on Sunday, September 8.
Rescue workers arrived at the scene to find Suwat Jonthaisong lying in a pool of blood. He had sustained a severe head wound and a fractured leg. Nearby was a badly damaged Honda Wave motorbike. Rescue workers performed CPR on the Grab driver, but he died at the scene.
Nearby was an unconscious 14 year old teenager who had sustained multiple injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and has not been named, due to his age. His Honda Scoopy motorbike had been badly damaged in the collision.
Mr. Phumipat, a motorbike taxi driver who witnessed the collision, says Mr Suwat’s motorbike was speeding as it drove against traffic. He believes the Grab driver did not see the teenager, who was heading for the overpass. The taxi driver says that particular spot is the scene of frequent collisions caused by motorbikes driving against traffic.
The authorities are reviewing CCTV footage to confirm the cause of the accident.
Driving against traffic, also known as “ghost riding” is a common phenomenon across Thailand and one of many traffic violations police frequently turn a blind eye to.
