A German man arrested for overstaying his visa has a criminal record for attempted murder in his home country.

Khaosod English reports that the arrest of “Mr Ahmed”, who was born in Muthanna province in Iraq, but with a German passport, was confirmed by immigration officers in Bangkok yesterday, July 3.

It’s understood the man’s arrest was the result of a complaint received by the Immigration Bureau, alleging that some hotels in the Sukhumvit Soi 4 area were allowing foreign nationals to stay without informing immigration officials.

In the course of their investigation, immigration officers met Mr Ahmed, who they felt was “acting suspiciously”. On checking his passport and the immigration database, they discovered his permission to remain in the kingdom had expired over 6 days prior.

While liaising with the German embassy, officers then discovered that Mr Ahmed had a criminal record in Germany. He reportedly belonged to a criminal gang in the country and had been involved in a violent assault in Hamburg, where he tried to murder a man by shooting him 4 times, seriously injuring him.

Following legal proceedings connected to his visa overstay, Mr Ahmed is being deported to Germany.
