Patients flee Krabi drug rehab facility

Twenty-six patients have fled a rehab facility in Krabi, citing “brutal conditions”.

It’s understood the patients hijacked a longtail boat to flee the facility on June 29, and were then seen walking along Hemthanon Road in Krabi.

Their escape comes just weeks after more than 100 patients fled another rehab facility on Siboya Island in Krabi province. It has not been confirmed if this latest escape involves the same facility, which has not been named for “legal reasons”.

Police have managed to capture 11 of the 26, although 15 are still unaccounted for, according to the report. One of the patients told police they wanted to return home and would not go back to the facility.

The patients allege that they were treated cruelly and have complained about poor conditions and food. They say they were limited to spending just 20 baht a day of money sent by their family members, which meant they couldn’t get enough food.

It’s understood the rehab facility houses more than 1,000 patients. The authorities are liaising with the escapees’ families to agree what will be done with patients who refuse to return to the facility.

The facility has not responded to the patients’ allegations.
