PM visits Chiang Rai flood victims today

The Thai PM has arrived in Chiang Rai today after flying out from Don Mueang this morning to visit flood victims and witness the devastation firsthand. The flooding in some areas is being described, statistically, as the worst in 80 years.

PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra is being accompanied by several Cabinet ministers during today’s trip up north.

According to a Thai PBS World report, the PM has told the governor of Chiang Rai that she doesn’t want any official reception organised, as she wants all resources fully dedicated to flood relief efforts and help for those affected.

Yesterday, Paetongtarn met with a number of her ministers, including Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, and Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin. Talks were focused on the flooding crisis in Chiang Rai and outlined urgent measures to assist the victims.

The PM has acknowledged the severity of the flooding, which is the worst in the province since 2022, and in some areas worse than records indicate over the past 80 years. She says the purpose of her visit is to see the reality on the ground and hear from those directly affected, in order to provide the most effective response.

During yesterday’s meeting, Paetongtarn emphasised that she welcomes suggestions and recommendations from all ministers, adding that now is the time for all parties to put political differences aside and come together to help the flood victims.

The PM says the first priority must be ensuring everyone is evacuated to safety, adding that the government will look after other matters, such as rehabilitation measures once the situation has stabilised.
