A shipment of methamphetamine destined for Australia has been seized by the Thai Customs Department, working with the Airport Interdiction Task Force. Officials also confiscated an inbound shipment of ketamine from Germany.
The seized narcotics were valued at over 14.74 million baht.
The methamphetamine, AKA. ice, was found in a cargo shipment being sent to Australia. Panthong Loykulnanta, a spokesperson for the Customs Department, says that on Monday, August 26, officers at the Suvarnabhumi Airport Cargo Inspection Office examined a shipment declared as a “digital ultrasonic cleaner”, weighing 2.1 kilograms.
They discovered 6 foil packages hidden inside green tea bags. On opening the packages, they found a clear crystal substance which tested positive for methamphetamine, a Category 1 narcotic.
The total weight of the shipment, including packaging, was around 5.6 kilos and valued at 13.44 million baht. The authorities are now working to identify those behind the shipment.
In a separate operation, customs officers at the Bangkok Express Mail Centre discovered a shipment of ketamine that had arrived from Germany. The ketamine, a Category 2 narcotic, was hidden in 3 containers of dietary supplements. The shipment including packaging, weighed just over 1.3 kilos and was valued at 1.30 million baht.
According to Panthong, in the period between October 1, 2023 and August 27, 2024, customs officials have carried out 130 drug interceptions, with a total value of 1,018.47 million baht.
