Two Thai nationals could face the death penalty after being arrested on Bali for drug trafficking. Indonesia remains a very dangerous place for anyone to risk trafficking illicit drugs.
The couple, 33 year old Rachanon Jongseeha, and his 31 year old girlfriend, Woranawan Wongsuwan, were arrested on Sunday, September 8, at Ngurah Rai Airport.
Khaosod English reports that the pair had just arrived in Indonesia from Thailand. They were found to be in possession of 1.9 kilos of methamphetamine, mixed with ecstasy powder and concealed in 108 sachets of a fruit-flavoured drink.
They were also carrying 20 ecstasy pills, according to Rudy Ahmad Sudrajat, anti-narcotics chief for Bali province. The authorities later arrested 2 Indonesians accused of ordering the drugs from Thailand.
Indonesia’s harsh drug laws mean all 4 may face the death penalty – execution by firing squad – if found guilty.
According to the Khaosod English report, two Thai nationals arrested on Bali in 2019 and charged with smuggling a kilo of methamphetamine were sentenced to 16 years in prison.
