Thai immigration police have raided a disused warehouse in the southern province of Songkhla, arresting 33 illegal migrant workers from Myanmar. Another 3 suspects, believed to be human traffickers, were taken into custody during yesterday’s raid – 2 Thais and 1 Malaysian national.
According to a Thai PBS World report, the remote warehouse, located in the Bang Klam district, had been converted into makeshift accommodation, with separate rooms housing male and female migrants. The illegal workers slept and ate there while awaiting further transport across the border into Malaysia.
During the police search, another group of 11 Burmese migrants was caught trying to enter the premises in a van. They had dressed in white shirts, attempting to disguise themselves as tourists.
All suspects were brought to the immigration office in Bang Klam and are being held pending a final decision on their case.
