Thailand’s popular penang curry has been named the world’s best, according to a report from the National News Bureau of Thailand. The culinary website TasteAtlas has named the southern Thai curry as the best in the world, with a score of 4.8 out of 5, beating out Japanese curry and China’s Sichuan hot pot.
According to TasteAtlas, penang curry is characterised by its combination of saltiness and sweetness, and its thick texture. The curry’s ingredients include stewed meat, dried chillis, kaffir lime leaves, coconut milk, cilantro, cumin, garlic, lemongrass, shallots and peanuts. Traditionally, it does not include any vegetables.
Thailand’s massaman curry also fared well in the rankings, scoring 4.6 out of 5 and coming in at number 8. TasteAtlas has described massaman as the mildest and sweetest curry, adding that this makes it stand out from other Thai curries.
Massaman is made by combining meat and potatoes with coconut milk and a curry paste made with roasted spices that include cumin, coriander, cloves, cinnamon, and peppercorns. The meat used in massaman tends to be thicker cuts, including mutton, lamb, beef, or bone-in chicken.
Other ingredients include fresh garlic, chili, galangal, lemongrass, tamarind paste, and palm sugar.
