One of Phuket’s longest-running sporting events expects to welcome more than 8,000 participants from over 40 countries when it takes place in June. The Supersports Laguna Phuket Marathon will take place from June 10 – 11 this year, hosted by the Laguna Phuket hotel and residential complex.
The marathon has been internationally certified by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races and is a qualifying event for the Boston Marathon. Assistant race director Charlie Jung, from organisers GAA Events, says the revival of international tourism generally has led to an increase in the number of overseas runners taking part.
“Entries are looking strong, with thousands already confirmed from across Thailand and overseas. What’s particularly encouraging this year is the return of interest from international participants. The pandemic limited international travel, and as Phuket sees a resurgence in international arrivals, we are also seeing growing interest amongst overseas runners and their families wanting to combine a run with a holiday in Phuket.”
The marathon will take runners past some of Phuket’s scenic best, including fruit plantations, local villages, and Sirinat National Park, in the north of the island. Other events taking place over the course of both days include the 2-kilometre kids’ run, as well as a 5-kilometre and 10-kilometre race, taking place on the Saturday morning. The half-marathon (over 21 kilometres), marathon relay and marathon (both over 42 kilometres) will take place on the Sunday morning.
Paul Wilson, VP deputy managing director at Laguna Phuket, says the event is an opportunity to promote Phuket as a top holiday and sporting destination.
“With Thailand’s recovery well and truly underway, we’re delighted to welcome Thai and international visitors back to Laguna Phuket and are looking to showcase the island as a world-class tourism and sports destination.”
