Phuket’s marine safety event will set new benchmarks – Tonight at Boat Lagoon

Following a spate of near misses, crashes and fatalities caused by marine safety issues around Phuket waters over the past month, the ‘United For Marine Safety’ event is being held tonight from 5pm at the White House in Boat Lagoon.

The event has been organised by local tour operator 5 Star Marine, together with other operators, the local Provincial Organisation and Phuket Governor’s office.

Anyone can attend.

“The Phuket Province Lead by the Governor of the Phuket Province, together with the private sector, including 5 Star Marine, Phuket Boat Lagoon and Nikorn Marine, and relevant government agencies come together to form an agreement to improve safety in the Marine Industry.”

The impetus for the event has come from responsible boat operators and the Phuket Governor’s office, recognising the spate of bad publicity is giving a bad impression of the island’s attitude towards boat safety for the millions of tourists each year.

“It is time for us as an Industry to come together and make a public commitment to increased safety standards.”

5 Star Marine’s CEO Shaun Stenning says an industry event like this is a long time coming.

“We are delighted from the response and concern of the Phuket Governor and local marine officials who are absolutely committed to tackle the problems head on, and make real changes to the operations and staffing of boats in the waters around Phuket and the region.”

A full code of conduct, new safety directives, drug-testing regimes and enforcement commitments will be discussed at the event.

Anyone can attend – it will be held at Boat Lagoon’s White House function centre. There is plenty of parking available next to the venue.
