The event ‘Observe the community charm of Phuket old town lifestyle – Baba wedding’ has been approved and will take place on September 3 – 4 in the heart of Phuket Old Town, in Talad Yai sub-district from 3pm onwards.
‘Baba’ is part of the local Peranakan culture, a combination of traditional Straits Chinese or Thai-Chinese cultures. Phuket, especially Phuket Town, has a long tradition of Chinese trading and culture infusing the history and traditions.
The event will feature a parade of newlyweds who will dress in traditional Baba style costumes, followed by their traditional wedding ceremony in an ancient Phuket house. The parade and wedding are an annual favourite for local Phuket residents.
There will also be Baba wedding exhibition to explain the history and details of the traditional style weddings. The event will offer space for local cuisine, local performance and local products that are both for sale and for demonstration classes.
The annual Baba Wedding is representing Phuket in one of 16 local festivals or traditions around Thailand that the government has selected to promote at the international level.
