An outbreak of Covid-19 has struck an elderly care home in Paklok, north-east Phuket, with at least 45 elderly residents infected. 3 staff members have also tested positive for the virus. The Phuket Express reports that the Phuket Elder Care Centre has a total of 75 residents and 29 employees and it’s understood that all the infected residents had received at least 3 vaccine doses, aimed at preventing severe illness or death in the event of infection.
The outbreak has been confirmed by the island’s provincial health chief, Dr. Kusak Kukiattikoon.
“Forty-two elders and 3 staffers have tested positive with Covid-19. One of the elders was transferred to a local hospital while others have been quarantined at the centre for treatment. However, all of them received at least triple doses of a Covid-19 vaccine.”
Meanwhile, the director of the care home, Ms. Puengpan Paojinda, says the infected residents may have contracted the virus at a hospital.
“Most of the elders have personal health issues. They often go to the hospital for medical care which might have been where the current outbreak originated. Normally, people from the outside are not allowed to visit the centre.”
