Engineers visited the ongoing repair works at the collapsed section of the road early this morning to check the integrity of the road following torrential rains in parts of Phuket last night. Heavy rains fell in at least Patong and Phuket Town, as evidenced by the many photos of flooding posted on social media overnight.
The Patong Hill road was closed down to all traffic around 10pm last night but was reopened to restricted traffic this morning. For now, motorcycles can travel in both directions on the hill, whilst small vehicles can only travel downhill, from Patong to Kathu, at this time.
Repair work on Patong Hill, and construction works on an alternative route from Kathu to the top of the hill, and another alternative route from Chalong to Phuket, continue.
Videos posted this morning show some of Patong’s roads caked with mud and slush this morning as locals clean up from the flooding overnight. In Phuket Town emergency responders had flood pumps working to avoid more water overflowing from the Bang Yai Canal, which flows through the middle of Old Phuket Town.
