Heavy rainfall in Phuket has caused widespread flooding across many parts of the island over the weekend.

The rain started late on Saturday night and continued into Sunday morning, flooding residential homes and making main roads inaccessible in some areas. Some of the worst-hit areas are around Heroines Monument, the Koh Kaew sub-district of Thalang, and Srisoontorn Road, around the Blue Tree Water Park.

The road behind Loch Palm Golf Club was also flooded, with many homes under a metre of water. A runoff from hills in the Kathu district, also led to flooding in Kamala.

There were problems at Phuket Airport too, with a number of incoming flights diverted due to poor visibility caused by the heavy rain. At least 15 flights were diverted, with some having to land at Krabi or Bangkok’s Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi airports. Others had to go further afield, with flights also diverted to Surat Thani, and Langkawi and Penang in Malaysia.

In addition, at least 4 departing domestic flights were unable to take off from Phuket Airport as they were waiting for passengers connecting from the diverted inbound flights.

By 10am yesterday, normal service had more or less been resumed, according to airport director, Monchai Tanod. Monday’s good weather has allowed the airport operations to return to normal.

Meanwhile, disaster mitigation chief Sophon Thongsai says most of the island has been affected by the flooding, with the worst of it in the north. The rainfall has eased off today and local officials say that within hours of the rain stopping, the floodwaters will disperse into the sea through the island’s drainage system.
