Two foreign boxers have shaken hands and apologised to each other after getting into a post-match brawl in Patong.
The Phuket Express reports that the fight broke out between an Irish and Russian boxer, after the Irish man was declared the winner of their boxing match in Patong. Their subsequent “unofficial” fight was captured on film by several witnesses and quickly went viral on social media.
It’s understood the brawl originally started as a skirmish between the boxers’ supporters, after the Irish boxer won the official match. The scuffle among the fans quickly spread to the ring, where it continued until security personnel and the authorities put a stop to it.
According to the report, the Phuket office of the Sports Authority of Thailand has confirmed both fighters got into a brawl but have now shaken hands and apologised to each other over the incident. As a result, the authority says it considers the matter closed and the ongoing sharing of the footage is damaging the image of Thai boxing in Phuket.
It goes on to say it’s taking steps to deal with a number of people who were not involved in the boxing match itself but invaded the stage and took part in the subsequent brawl, in violation of spectator regulations.
Meanwhile, the names of the Irish and Russian boxers, and the gyms they represented, have not been disclosed.
