Phuket’s abandoned shopping centre ‘Lucky Complex’, that has been abandoned for more than 20 years, is planning to reopen after an investor leased it out with a new 30 years lease. It has been an unlucky ‘white elephant’ since March 2002 when it was closed down as one of the town’s largest department stores and fish markets.
This was the headline in the Phuket Gazette 20 years ago…
The Phuket Provincial Administration Organisation (OrBorJor) has taken back management of the abandoned Lucky Complex in Saphan Hin after the company in charge of running it failed to pay rent on the building for more than two years.”
This is what the huge abandoned building has looked like recently. It was originally built in 1992…
During yesterday’s meeting at Phuket Provincial Administration Organisation Office, the President, Rewat Areerob, said that after 20 years, an investor came forward willing to lease the building for 30 years, from November 2021 – November 2051, with a budget of 62 million baht, mostly for renovations and marketing.
He noted that the investor is planning for the design and the purpose of the investment was initially to build a mall but the plan has been adjusted. It will be run as commercial retail focus for the Saphan Hin end of Phuket Town.
