National police chief Torsak Sukvimol has visited Phuket to promote tourists’ safety and encourage officers at the Tha Chatchai checkpoint, the gateway onto the island when arriving by road.
The visit took place on Monday, August 26, with Torsak carrying out an inspection at the checkpoint in the northern Thalang district. While there, the national police chief met with Surapong Thanomjit, Region 8 Police Commander, and Sinlert Sukhum, chief of Phuket Provincial Police.
At the meeting, the officers discussed a number of the “Phuket Model” safety measures, aimed at enhancing tourist safety on the island. The measures include:
• The collection of tourist information in a bid to enhance safety, improve the tourist experience and take action against “illegal foreigners”.
• The implementation of road safety measures to improve the flow of traffic. This includes banning trucks from the island’s roads at rush hour, a move which has reportedly been welcomed by Phuket motorists.
• The strict enforcement of the law when it comes to foreigners behaving badly. It’s understood 2,800 cases of criminal activity and 15,000 of traffic violations carried out by foreigners have been processed so far.
At the meeting, the police chief praised Phuket’s police officers for their efforts to keep both tourists and residents safe.
The Phuket Express reports that Torsak also called on Region 8 Police to look into ways security at the Tha Chatchai checkpoint could be enhanced through the use of technology.
