Phuket court re-opens ‘tourist section’ following rise in cases

A dedicated tourist section is set to re-open at Phuket Provincial Court after it was closed during the Covid-19 pandemic. The decision to re-open the section is the result of the rise in cases related to tourists.

Kriangsak Rodpunshoo, acting chief justice of the Phuket Provincial Court, says there has been a surge in the number of criminal and civil cases involving tourists, both foreign and Thai. This risks affecting tourists’ confidence in their personal safety and that of their belongings. According to Kriangsak, it risks affecting Thai tourism as a whole.

“Proceedings in the tourist case section will help ensure justice for tourists when a criminal or civil dispute, or a dispute with a state agency, arises so they can receive legal protection. This will build tourists’ confidence and create a good image of Phuket province and tourism in Thailand as a whole.”

According to a Bangkok Post report, the court’s tourist section first opened in September 2017, before closing during the pandemic. It provides tourists with assistance in filing consumer complaints, helps with arranging negotiations, tracking down tourists who are witnesses, and issuing subpoenas to businesses facing legal action.

There has been a surge in criminal activity involving foreigners in Phuket recently, including a Swiss man accused of assaulting a Thai doctor and two New Zealand brothers who attacked a police officer. In more recent days, there have also been two cases of foreigners in altercations with taxi drivers on the island.
