Phuket garners over 1 million public votes in support of hosting 2028 Specialised Expo

BIE Paris Event

Phuket has now received over a million public votes in favour of the island province hosting the 2028 Specialised Expo. According to a report from the National News Bureau of Thailand, officials are hopeful the high number of public votes will strengthen Phuket’s chances of being chosen to host the event.

The island is up against locations in United States, Argentina, Serbia, and Spain, who are all competing to host the Expo in 2028. If Phuket’s bid is successful, at least 7 million foreign visitors are expected to travel to the event, generating revenue of at least 50 billion baht, according to deputy government spokesperson, Tipanan Sirichana.

Exactly how the island could cope with such a large influx of visitors at one time has not been outlined or detailed at this stage.

Ms. Sirichana says having Phuket host the event would also help promote Thailand as a top “wellness travel destination” . The island has already been praised for its readiness to welcome back international tourists and was ranked third in a 2022 list of the Best Islands in Southeast Asia, compiled by luxury travel and lifestyle magazine, Travel & Leisure.

If you would like to back Phuket to host the 2028 Specialised Expo, you can do so by registering your support HERE. Confirmation of the winning bid is expected to be announced in June this year.
