Phuket residents are on flood watch once again, with an official notice issued by provincial governor Sophon Suwannarat. Rain, even heavy rains, are forecast for the rest of this week, into the weekend, before abating from next Monday.
Phuket’s daily forecast HERE.
It comes as heavy rains lashed the island yesterday, September 16, with the downpours expected to continue through to tomorrow, according to the Phuket Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office.
However, a forecast from the Thai Meteorological Department warns that adverse weather conditions will continue – and get worse – through to the weekend.
Officials warn of flash floods, flood waters, mudslides and strong winds, with officials continuing to monitor conditions and urging the public to do the same.
Whilst the flooding will tend to occur in all the usual places, much of the island has not been affected by flooding.
Yesterday, parts of the island endured torrential downpours, with flooding along Chao Fa Road making the area in front of Wat Chalong impassable. There was also flooding along Chao Fa Road East in front of Wat Ladthi Wanaram and in the area of Baan Nabon.
Other affected areas include Rassada and Koh Kaew, where the rain caused traffic delays, while in the northern sub-district of Srisoontorn, local authority workers were dispatched to remove fallen trees.
Meanwhile, in Kata, tourists at the base of the hill where the Big Buddha is situated were prevented from returning to their hotels as a precaution. Jadet Wicharasorn, mayor of Karon, and a number of district officials were also on site to help residents affected by severe flooding in Soi Ketkwan.
Officials are also monitoring the Bang Yai canal in Phuket Town, with the latest update being that the water level remains safe.
