The authorities in Phuket have launched a new project to improve road safety, using a network of 94 female volunteers. The majority of traffic incidents in Phuket involve male drivers.
The new initiative will address “risky” driving behaviours in order to reduce road traffic accidents on the island.
Phuket Provincial Police Commander Sinlert Sukhum presided over the launch of the project, which took place at the The Pago Design Hotel, north of Phuket Town on September 5.
Sinlert thanked the 94 female volunteers who have undergone training to take part in the project. He acknowledged the importance of the volunteers’ role in supporting the police in their efforts to reduce road traffic accidents and deal with issues such as drug use in local communities.
“This project aims to empower female volunteers to become key figures in promoting road safety. The volunteers will work closely with authorities to monitor risky behaviours such as not wearing helmets, illegal driving, and assist in traffic management.”
Also at the launch were various government agency officials, representatives of road safety bodies, and attendees from both the public and private sector.
“They will also serve as community advocates, raising awareness, educating locals, and issuing warnings to high-risk groups.”
The project is part of a wider effort to improve road safety in Phuket, in order to reduce the number of people injured or killed on the island’s roads.
