Nearly 1,500 islanders have been affected by the weekend’s heavy flooding around parts of Phuket. A major clean-up operation continues, with parts of the districts of Kathu and Thalang declared “disaster areas” by the Governor. Whilst Monday’s sunshine has been the greatest help, volunteers and rescue crews have working 24 hour shifts to attend to the worst affected areas.

Heavy monsoon rainfall on Saturday night into Sunday morning, triggering severe flooding that caused extensive damage to homes, land, public facilities and livestock. In total, 740 households across 7 sub-districts and 41 villages have been affected, some houses deluged under up to 1.5 metres of water.

In the district of Kathu, the flooding has impacted 45 people from 50 households, while in Thalang, 1,423 people from 690 households have been affected. Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat has declared both districts disaster zones that are in need of emergency relief.

The governor has stressed the need to continue monitoring flooded areas, pointing out that the construction of many housing estates has caused flood locations to move. Local officials have installed extra water pumps to speed up drainage.

It’s understood a number of housing projects have been affected, with many still under water. One of the worst affected is the Pruksa Ville Thalang-Thepkrasattri housing project in the Thalang district. Homeowners say they each paid 4 million baht for a house there and the project has flooded 8 times in 5 years.

Meanwhile, at Passorn Koh Kaew Village in the Koh Kaew sub-district of Mueang district, a 2-metre-high dam has collapsed, sending a stream of mud and debris into the housing estate.

The Royal Thai Navy has sent in personnel and equipment to help with the island’s clean-up operation and to assist with traffic management.
