Police in Phuket have arrested a Russian man who was providing illegal motorbike lessons to foreigners on the island.

It’s understood the man’s arrest was the result of a tip-off that a foreigner was giving motorbike lessons in a parking lot near the floating market of Kathu district.

A subsequent investigation uncovered an Instagram account held by the Russian, who has been named only as 29 year old “Roman”. According to a Khaosod English report, the Russian description of the account translates to ““Motorcycle School, Motorcycle Rental – Phuket”, with a contact phone number.

Police visited the training location yesterday, June 23, and found the Russian teaching a woman, also Russian, how to ride a motorbike. The woman told officers she had paid 2,000 baht for 3 days of motorbike lessons, having found the Russian through an online search.

The instructor was arrested and taken to Kathu Police Station, where he was charged with being a foreigner working without a work permit.

As part of their investigation, the authorities uncovered direct messages between the instructor and his customers, on Instagram and other platforms, as well as reviews of his motorbike lessons from past students.
