Russians chase motorbike bag snatcher

A Russian couple tried, but failed, to catch a motorbike bag snatcher in Phuket on Sunday night, June 23.

The Bangkok Post reports that a Russian woman was a passenger on her friend’s motorbike, travelling along busy Takua Pa Road in Phuket Town, when an opportunistic thief, also on a motorbike, snatched her handbag from her lap.

The woman, named as Alisa Makarenko, told police that she and her friend decided to give chase in an attempt to recover her bag. She says the bag contained 4 debit cards, her glasses, motorbike licence, and a power bank – but just 60 baht in cash.

She also told officers that the thief was wearing a distinctive blue helmet and that her friend repeatedly sounded the horn on their motorbike as they attempted to chase down the culprit. It’s understood Alisa also filmed the chase but the thief managed to get away.

Tourist police have advised her to freeze her debit cards and are reviewing footage of the chase, along with CCTV footage from the route, in a bid to identify the thief.
