The Thai authorities want to come up with a “Phuket Model” solution to deal with foreigners behaving badly, which could then be applied in other provinces.

The Bangkok Post reports that Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat and a number of senior police officers will meet with 12 consuls (diplomatic representativesto discuss crimes committed by their citizens in Thailand. Officials hope they can come up with a “Phuket Model” of crime prevention and law enforcement.

It’s understood that initial talks will focus on finding solutions for crimes committed by foreigners on Phuket. There has been a whole series of stories of “foreigners behaving badly” making the headlines in recent months.

Kitrat Panphet, acting national police chief, says if successful, the Phuket Model solution could be rolled out to other provinces dealing with “troublesome farang”.

One suggestion for the Phuket Model is that it should inform visitors about which activities are illegal in Thailand (although one would think attacking a police officer, kicking a doctor, assaulting a taxi driver, verbally abusing an ambulance driver, and threatening someone with knives are illegal activities pretty much everywhere).

Kitrat says he wants to see increased vigilance from the Immigration Bureau, Phuket police, the Tourist Police, and Provincial Police Region 8, which oversees Phuket and other provinces in the upper South.

As well as a number of attacks involving foreigners, there has also been a rise in complaints about foreign nationals working in occupations reserved for Thais.
