Three Phuket businesses raided as Thai nominee crackdown continues

The authorities have raided 3 businesses in Phuket as the crackdown on companies illegally using Thai nominees continues. Only a week ago 231 people were arrested over similar illegal company set-ups,, in that case, mostly Russian people.

In the latest raids, carried out yesterday, June 6, the Department of Special Investigation, worked with the Immigration Police, Tourist Police, and other Phuket authorities to investigate 3 companies suspected of operating illegally.

According to a Khaosod English report, Mr Thaveewat Surasit, director of the DSI’s Security Cases Division, says the authorities had obtained search warrants for the businesses in question. He says the companies were searched as they were suspected of being involved in registering businesses for foreigners.

“The purpose of enforcing the law is to prevent foreigners from exploiting loopholes in the law and at the same time to ensure that the law does not have a negative impact on investment. The aim is to attract beneficial investors into the country while excluding those who cause harm. Phuket is a critical area in this regard.”

Two of the companies raided are in the district of Kathu, the first being Phuket Best Accounting and a second, unnamed company. At both locations, the authorities seized financial records belonging to Russian, Pakistani and Indian nationals, showing transactions totalling 200 – 300 million baht.

The third company raided is understood to be based out of a residential address in Rock Garden Village, in the sub-district of Rassada, just east of Phuket Town.

According to the DSI, the evidence shows financial data relating to two groups of foreigners: Europeans  – primarily Russians, and Pakistanis and Indians. The authorities say the Russians appear to be focused on real-estate, whereas the Pakistanis and Indians are involved in restaurants.

So far, the evidence shows only a handful of Thais are involved.
