Phuket officials have issued a weather warning for the island province, with heavy rainfall forecast from today through Tuesday, September 17.
Governor Sophon Suwannarat issued the warning through the Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Command Centre, instructing local officials and government agencies to be on high alert for heavy to very heavy rain, with a risk of flash flooding and landslides.
It comes as the Thai Meteorological Department issues a forecast of heavy to very heavy rain across the country, and in Phuket in particular.
“The Andaman Sea and upper Gulf will see strong waves between now and Tuesday, up to 3 metres in height in the Andaman and even higher in thunderstorm areas.”
The governor’s directive highlighted the risk of flash floods, forest runoffs, mudslides and dangerous sea conditions. Sophon has ordered local officials to keep up to date with weather conditions and to monitor areas considered high-risk for flooding.
He has also ordered the closure of natural tourist attractions if they become dangerous, along with the closure of flooded roads or tunnels. The public should be warned about the dangers of strong winds and waves, with a ban on swimming in the sea.
“Boats are advised to proceed with caution and expect potential restrictions on setting sail should conditions worsen.”
Local authorities are to monitor high-risk areas 24 hours a day and issue early warnings for flash floods and landslides. Residents in those areas are strongly advised to move their belongings to higher ground and be ready to evacuate if necessary.
