A woman has died after the motorbike she was riding was struck by a taxi in central Phuket yesterday morning, September 18.
The accident happened at around 5.30am, on Srisoontorn Road, just north of Soi Bangtao 2, in Cherngtalay. According to a Phuket News report, the woman’s bike was hit head-on by a taxi, on the wrong side of the road.
Police and emergency responders arrived on the scene to find a grey coloured, Toyota, bearing a green taxi plate and a “Phuket International Airport” sticker, parked on the far right of the road, facing oncoming traffic. The taxi had a cracked windscreen and had sustained heavy damage to its front right side.
The driver, 36 year old Chakpong Phunphon, was waiting at the scene when officers arrived. He told police he’d been driving to the airport from Kamala when the accident happened. He said he doesn’t know how it happened and that he only realised after the collision that he had hit a motorbike.
Around 20 metres from the taxi, officers found a Honda Wave motorbike on its side, and 20 metres before it, the motorbike rider’s body. She has been named as 33 year old Dueanphen Kaosuan. Her body was transported to Thalang Hospital, where she was formally pronounced dead and her relatives informed.
According to police, road conditions were good at the time of the accident, with the road dry, despite the inclement weather.
Chakpong underwent a breathalyser test at Cherngtalay Police Station, which came back negative for alcohol. He is being questioned further as part of the investigation into the cause of the accident.
