Songkran might be over but the massive clean up continues around the country.

Chonburi’s popular Bang Saen Beach and the surrounding roads are covered in litter discarded by Songkran holidaymakers. In response, local officials have announced a “clean-up” week to tackle the problem.

In addition to the recent Songkran holiday, Chon Buri recently held its “Wan Lai” celebrations on Sunday and Monday. Festivities took place at Bang Saen Beach, in the Muang district. Over the course of the two days, people gathered to pay their respects to Buddha, to build sand mounds, and to partake in traditional games.

With thousands of visitors in the area, local residents are now being confronted by mounds of garbage that tourists seemingly neglected to take with them.

Yesterday, Saen Suk Municipality took to Facebook, sharing photos of the trash-strewn Liab Hat Bang Saen Road and surrounding areas. The post stated that while the area is happy to welcome visitors, it’s not so happy to see the trash left behind.

“We are happy to welcome everyone, but when you leave, who picks up the garbage?”

The post went on to announce a big clean-up operation taking place this week, with officials inviting local residents to help out. The post also stated that a number of local businesses and officials, in addition to students from Burapha University, have all signed up to take part.

“We urge vendors to clean up the areas where they set up their stalls. If everyone cleans up after themselves, our Bang Saen Beach will return to its beautiful state in no time.”
