Facial recognition required for some online services from Thai banks

All Thai banks will soon require facial recognition via the National Digital ID platform for customers wishing to make large withdrawals, according to a Coconuts report.

The same technology used at airports and shopping malls will now be deployed to confirm a person’s identity if they wish to withdraw sums of 50,000 baht or more, transfer more than 200,000 baht a day, or increase their transfer limit to more than 50,000 baht.

Bangkok Bank has confirmed the move, in a text recently issued to customers.

“Please bring your passport or other identification documents and passbook to update your latest personal information and take a facial photo at any Bangkok Bank branch nationwide.”

The change takes affect from next month, according to the Coconuts report, and is the latest measure in the Know Your Business policies, designed to target money laundering and financial scams.

Some banks are allowing customers to register their face via their banking app, while others require customers to do it via an ATM. What is unlikely to come as a surprise to many, is that most banks require customers to visit their branch to do so.

Listed below are Thailand’s major banks and how customers can register their facial identification:

Bangkok Bank: In branch
Krung Thai Bank: ATM or in branch
Kasikorn Bank: K Plus app, ATM, in branch
Ayutthaya/Krungsri: In branch
Government Savings Bank: In branch
Siam Commercial Bank (SCB): In branch
