With China having lifted its Covid-19 travel restrictions, their travellers are eager to venture beyond their country’s borders once more. And according to recent data from Airbnb, Thailand is their number 1 choice, based on searches on the homestay provider’s website.
According to a Nation Thailand report, the data shows that within 24 hours of Beijing lifting travel restrictions, Thailand was the most searched destination among Chinese travellers. The searches ranked as follows:
01.Thailand
02. United States
03. United Kingdom
04. Japan
05. Australia
06. Canada
07. Korea
08. France
09. Malaysia
10. Italy
Over the Chinese New Year holiday, Airbnb says Thailand proved one of the most popular destinations in the world with Chinese users, alongside the US and Japan. Within Thailand, cities and beach destinations including Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Pattaya were the most searched for among the Chinese.
Amanpreet Bajaj from Airbnb says the data is encouraging.
“After more than 2 years of travel restrictions, the desire for international travel among Chinese guests is at an all-time high. With Thailand being one of the most popular destinations globally, it is no surprise that Chinese travellers have ranked it top of their list of places to visit.”
The Airbnb data also shows that out of more than 60 “unique stay” categories launched on the site last year, there has been a surge in the number of Chinese travellers wanting to book historical homes, domes, boat houses and camping tents in 2023.
