Parents of “erratic” Russian apologise to Phuket governor

The parents of a Russian man who broke into the Phuket governor’s office have apologised on their son’s behalf. The Phuket News reports that the couple, accompanied by their son, met with Governor Sophon Suwannarat and his wife on Saturday, January 27.

It follows an incident on January 17 when their 26 year old son smashed a glass door and broke into the governor’s office at Provincial Hall. After managing to evade police and flee the building, he was later spotted trying to steal a motorbike. The man was subsequently arrested and taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital, where it was determined he was suffering some sort of mental breakdown.

During their meeting with the governor and his wife, the man’s parents expressed their regret at their son’s actions and apologised fully. In response, Sophon asked them to take care of their son and to ask other Russians on the island not to engage in criminal activity.

At the time of the Russian man’s arrest, the authorities stated that he would face criminal charges and possible deportation. The governor did not confirm if this is still the case following his meeting with the man’s parents. Neither the Russian man nor his parents have been named by the authorities.
