It’s that time of year again… Phuket officials have launched a road safety campaign as people prepare to take to the road for the Songkran holiday. With Thailand having the dubious honour of being one of the worst countries in the world for road safety, the “Songkran Seven Days of Danger” campaign has been launched nationwide and will run until next Monday.

In Phuket, Vice Governor Arnuparb Rodkhwan Yodrabam says officials have also launched the Phuket Road Safety Centre, which will run alongside the national safety campaign. He says the target is to reduce the number of road traffic accidents and fatalities on the island.

According to a Phuket Express report, data shows that most road traffic accidents are the result of drunk driving or a failure to wear seat belts or, in the case of motorbikes, helmets.

In addition to road safety, Phuket is also turning its attention to marine safety, with both local and foreign tourist numbers expected to increase over the holiday. Measures are being implemented to ensure all passengers wear life jackets while on boats.
