Two Korean men, arrested in Chiang Mai for working illegally as tour guides, are wanted in South Korea for their roles in a luxury car scam case.
Khaosod English reports that the men were arrested after Immigration officers received a tip-off that there were foreigners working as tour guides in Chiang Mai. A further investigation revealed that the men in question were wanted in connection with Ponzi schemes in South Korea.
The men, who have been named as Mr. Kim Jong-nam and Mr. Han Myeong-gyu, were arrested in the Chang Phueak area of Chiang Mai’s Mueang district. They have admitted to working as tour guides, telling officers they would advertise their services on social media and had been doing so for around 2 months.
It’s understood the men would earn at least 10,000 – 15,000 baht per job, depending on the number of tourists and how long their services were required for.
A joint operation between the Thai and South Korean authorities revealed that the men were wanted in their home country for their involvement in a luxury car Ponzi scheme.
It’s reported the scheme had over 60 victims, with total losses amounting to more than 109 million baht.
The men have been taken into custody for legal processing.
