Police in Phuket are investigating an alleged assault on an Iranian tourist in Patong.

The tourist, named only as Mr. Korhanshirazi, told officers he’d been walking on Bangla Road on Saturday night, June 15, when he bumped into a Thai person, which sparked an argument. He says around 4 or 5 Thai men then appeared and attacked him.

According to a Khaosod English report, Wisanu Chumee of Patong Police Station was alerted to the incident and arrived on the scene to find an injured Mr Korhanshirazi with blood pouring down his face and onto his shirt.

It’s understood officers called an ambulance to tend to the tourist’s wounds but he declined treatment.

Following an unsuccessful search of the area to find the perpetrators of the attack, police checked CCTV footage and from that were able to identify those involved. According to the report, both parties were brought to Patong Police Station for further investigation and legal processing.

The authorities have reiterated that such incidents tarnish Phuket’s reputation as a tourist destination and have asked local residents to cooperate in welcoming visitors to the island.
