In first real drenching of the 2024 wet season, the usually flooding has left motorists stranded and houses flooded. Phuket residents woke up to flooding across several parts of the island this morning, following heavy downpours overnight.
The Phuket News reports that the flooding substantially disrupted traffic earlier this morning, with several roads under water.
In front of Thalang Technical College, in the north of the island, heavy flooding was reported on Thepkrasattri Road, leading to Phuket Airport. Thalang Police were notified at around 4.30am, with floodwater leading to dangerous driving conditions along the route.
It’s understood that rising water led to one woman driving to work at the airport to become trapped in her car. Rescue workers from Phuket Kusoldharm Foundation arrived to find her car stuck in the middle of the road but were able to get her and her vehicle to safety.
A section of the affected road was temporarily closed, with airport-bound traffic diverted to lanes on the opposite side. The road was re-opened when flooding subsided sometime later and driving conditions returned to normal.
There have also been reports of minor flooding in other parts of the island, resulting in traffic delays earlier this morning.
