Burmese baby rescued 17 hours after falling down well in northwest Thailand

A 1 year old baby girl has been rescued after being trapped in a well for 17 hours in the northwestern province of Tak. The Tat province is on the border with Myanmar.

It’s understood the child’s parents, who are Burmese migrant workers, had to leave her unattended in order to go to work. While they were working in the fields, their baby fell down a well 15 metres deep, with a width of just 30 centimetres.

Over 100 rescue workers from the Disaster Response Association worked tirelessly to save the baby, using heavy machinery and digging another hole to reach her. Yesterday morning, they finally found the crying child and provided her with oxygen. Emergency workers say the rescue effort had to take as long as it did to avoid injuring the infant.

Authorities say that they feared that the well could collapse on itself and injure the child if they continued to use the digger, so they reverted to using hand-held shovels to remove the final few metres of earth.

The parents were reportedly in an understandable state of extreme distress.

At 10:45am, rescue workers confirmed the child had been successfully removed on a stretcher and transferred to hospital by ambulance.
