One door closes and another one opens. That’s the case with the original Robinson department store in Phuket Town, just after a new Robinson shopping centre opened up adjacent to the Heroine’s Monument 8 months ago.
Phuket residents are preparing to bid farewell to the island’s oldest department store as it prepares to close down after 28 years. Robinson Ocean Phuket, right in the heart of Phuket Town, will close its doors for the final time on June 30.
It will be remembered as the island’s first department store and indeed, the first department store in Thailand to have a glass lift (considered very ‘fancy’ at the time). KFC also opened its first Phuket outlet in Robinson Ocean Phuket.
Nation Thailand reports that the store took to Facebook to confirm the closure.
“Count down begins for Robinson Ocean Phuket, the oldest shopping mall in Phuket, with 28 years of service”.
The post garnered many comments from locals and foreigners, eager to share their memories of time spent shopping there.
“Thank you for all the good memories for Phuket people”.
Ahead of its closure at the end of June, the department store is offering big discounts on a number of products, available for purchase in-store or online.
The department store was a joint venture between the Robinson Company and Phuket Ocean Group. It has been serving the island since October 12, 1995.
Robinson opened a new-style, turquoise blue, department store and retail shopping centre on the north west corner of Heroine’s Monument in August 2022.
