A taxi driver in Phuket is to be charged after losing control of his vehicle and slamming into a tree on Tuesday afternoon, May 30. The Phuket News reports that the 51 year old cab driver, Monsit Mapiyapan, remains in hospital following the incident.
The collision happened on the northbound lanes of Thepkrasattri Road, around 300 metres from the old airport intersection, at around 4.45pm.
Thitiwat Asasing from Thalang Police was notified, with officers and rescue workers arriving at the scene to find Monsit still stuck in the taxi. The driver had sustained injuries to his chest as a result of the airbag deploying, along with injuries to his leg.
Rescue workers got Monsit out of the vehicle and he was given first aid at the site before being transferred to Thalang Hospital. According to Thitiwat, the car doors were damaged in the collision with the tree, while the airbag had broken the windscreen.
According to eye witness reports, it had been raining and the road was wet when Monsit’s taxi was seen travelling at high speed. However, Thitiwat says that a lack of CCTV cameras in that area means police are unable to charge Monsit with speeding.
“He will be charged with reckless driving and destruction of government property.”
