Three Kenyan women have been arrested at Phuket Airport after they were found to have ingested nearly 3 kilograms of cocaine. The cocaine was in capsules in the women’s stomachs, as they attempted to smuggle the narcotic into Thailand.
According to a Phuket Express report, Sakoo Police say they were responding to a tip-off from a concerned citizen, who told them the woman were smuggling a large quantity of cocaine into the kingdom. The Kenyan nationals were detained following their arrival at Phuket International Airport on Sunday, September 3.
The suspects have not been named, but it’s understood two of the women are 26 years old and the third is 34 years old. An initial search following their arrest at Phuket International Airport found nothing illegal. However, the women were then transported to Thalang Hospital, where X-rays showed many items in their stomachs.
According to the report, it took two days for the women to expel all the capsules, which were subsequently found to contain 2.8 kilograms of cocaine.
The women have not made any statements and are apparently refusing to cooperate with police or answer any questions. They are currently being held at Sakoo Police Station, facing charges of importing Category 2 narcotics into the kingdom and illegal possession of Category 2 narcotics.
Following what is likely to be an extensive prison sentence, they are likely to be deported from Thailand and blacklisted. Police say they are not releasing the women’s names at this time, while they try to determine if the suspects had any accomplices.
