A young French tourist has died after seemingly falling at a waterfall on Koh Samui. The Phuket Express reports that rescuers recovered the body of 20 year old Ryan Meghan from the island’s Namuang Waterfall 2 yesterday.
There have been quite a few similar incidents at San waterfalls during wet season over recent years.
According to the report, Mr Meghan’s friends, Merina Emma and another unnamed person, had reported him missing to Koh Samui police after they visited the waterfall on December 2.
The friends told officers that they had gone to the waterfall with Ryan, but that he had left them to visit another part of the waterfall. When he hadn’t returned after around five minutes, his friends began calling his name but got no response.
When they found their friend’s sandals and phone on the ground, they decided to report him as missing. Police and rescue workers launched a search for the missing Frenchman but this was eventually abandoned as the weather turned and it began to get dark.
At 8.30am the following day, Sunday, December 3, the search resumed and Ryan’s body was located at 11.15am. It then took another 3 hours to retrieve the body from the waterfall, which was taken to Koh Samui Hospital for an autopsy to be performed.
Koh Samui police are liaising with the French Embassy to notify next-of-kin.
